Lorazepam, known under the brand names Temesta and Tavor, is an active substance from the group of benzodiazepines. In medical practice, it is used as a calming and sleep-inducing medication and may – depending on dosage and form of use – exhibit anxiolytic, sedative, muscle-relaxant and anticonvulsant properties.
The active ingredient affects the central nervous system by enhancing the effect of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). As a result, excessive neuronal activity is reduced. Lorazepam may help to facilitate falling asleep and shorten nighttime waking phases. Many users experience the effect as calming and stabilizing.
When used short-term, lorazepam is generally considered well tolerated. However, even with proper use, impairment of concentration and reaction ability may occur. Activities such as driving vehicles or operating machinery should therefore be performed with particular caution. The simultaneous use of alcohol or other centrally depressant substances can significantly intensify the effects.
Benzodiazepines such as lorazepam are not intended for long-term use. With prolonged use or higher dosages, there is an increased risk of psychological and physical dependence. The risk of dependence increases with both duration of use and dosage. Responsible, time-limited use is therefore especially important.
